The plain of the Empordà has a Mediterranean coastal climate. In this area the northerly Tramontana wind, cold and dry, can rage violently in the winter months, while the south-westerly Garbí, warm and humid, makes
itself felt in the summer. The autumn and, to a lesser extent, the spring are the periods of heavy rain, and it is at these times of year that floods may occur.
The Alt Empordà district is subjected to winds from all points of the compass since it is a plain that is wide open to the sea. Temperatures below 0º can be recorded between December and February, but the temperature can also fall below freezing-point in November or March, and it is generally considered that there is an average of 29 days of frost each year. It hardly ever snows.
The hottest month is usually July. In the summer months the temperature in the shade can be over 30º, but in the winter there can be days when the maximum temperature is no higher than 6º. Whilst the average temperature in January is about 9º, in July it goes up to 24º.
The proximity of the sea to Llançà and the fact that there is no rugged terrain to stop the wind in its path means that the temperature remains moderate thanks to the atmospheric humidity, closely related to the waters of the sea.
